Insurance Fraud

Insurance Fraud is a very serious offense and can result in serious charges and even jail time. Investigative Services are set into place to prevent and detect insurance crime. Trillium Mutual Insurance Company is a unique company as we have our own Insurance Investigator as part of our specialized staff. Our Investigator helps the Claims Department in detecting attempted fraud before claims are paid out which allows the Claims Department to identify and allow legitimate claims to be processed quicker. Probably the most common type of insurance fraud involves policyholders exaggerating or inflating claims. This is usually done by reporting items as stolen or damaged but really they are not or by exaggerating the value of items. Another typical type of insurance fraud occurs when a policyholder exaggerates the type and nature of injuries they sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Actions such as these drive up the cost of claims and have a direct impact on insurance rates.

The Canadian Coalition Against Insurance Fraud was formed in 1994 to slow down property and casualty insurance fraud. The CCAIF is used to help out the insurance industry and cut down on general claims insurance fraud. The CCAIF Board consists of insurance and medical professionals, along with representatives from local law enforcement.

Insurance fraud is a serious crime and our staff at Trillium Mutual Insurance Company is doing their best to keep fraud rates low. It costs everyone money if we allow insurance fraud to happen. If you know of someone who is committing insurance fraud, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Your call will be anonymous and you may be eligible for a cash reward.
