Ontario Mutual Insurance Association
Trillium Mutual Insurance, like the other 46 Farm Mutuals in Ontario, is a member of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association. The association provides us with Educational Seminars for all levels of personnel, as well as forms and suggested rating programs.
We provide to the association our statistical reporting on the various lines of business we write. Both the offices of the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan (FMRP) and the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association (OMIA) are located in Cambridge, Ontario.
There is a strong network of purely mutual insurance companies operating in Ontario - commonly referred to as "the farm mutuals". These are commonly based insurance companies which are owned by their policyholders. There are no stockholders and any surplus either remains in the company's surplus account or may be refunded to the policyholders - at the discretion of the policyholder directors.
These mutuals are run by a Board of Directors (usually 6, 9 or 12 individuals) which is elected from among the policyholders. Each policyholder has one vote and one third of the Board of Directors is re-elected each year at the company's annual meeting of policyholders. Almost all of these companies are now over 100 years old. They have remained strong and stable throughout the years and have provided good, reliable service to the communities in which they operate. Ontario's farm mutuals provide a broad range of insurance and financial products to participants.
The Canadian Association of Mutual Insurance Companies networks mutuals across Canada. Ontario's pure mutuals participate in what is called the Fire Mutuals Guarantee Fund through which they all stand behind any one company within the group so that the policyholder's claim are guaranteed to be paid in the event of a disaster. The mutuals also own their own reinsurance company - the Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. FMRP was the first Canadian-owned reinsurance company when formed in 1959 and is one of a very few Canadian-owned reinsurers in existence today.
